Welcome from the community group

Dear new resident,

Welcome to the village!

Moving home can be a stressful time, so to ease you into the goings on of the village you now get to call home we thought we would share some useful to know information for living here…

First of all, the village receives two magazines- Meon Valley Forum and Soberton & Newtown Parish magazine.

An online copy of the Parish Magazine can be found on the Church web pages as this is a church magazine.

In this you’ll find all sorts of useful information from key contact details, up and coming events, some of the village history and lots more. The magazines are hand delivered by local volunteers- there is a section dedicated to letting the village know of new arrivals so feel free to email the Parish Magazine Editor to let them know you’re here!

The village keeps in touch with Facebook… there are several groups to keep an eye on…

Soberton Echo if you’re after something (recommendations, something you’d like to borrow / find out about something you’ve seen – this is the best place to ask/check)

Soberton Parish Council there are regular announcements to keep an eye out for

Soberton and Newtown veg and plant swap & sell

Sobernewts – the local wildlife conservation group

Soberton players– a thriving amateur dramatic group

There is a local community group interested in protecting the village from flooding, planning issues, improving biodiversity and water quality and any other issues residents want to discuss and take forwards. If you’d like to become a member email: newtownsobertoncommunity1@gmail.com

The village best avoids flooding by ensuring that ditches are kept clear by doing regular maintenance, neighbours communicating and by avoiding replacing ditches with pipes. If you have a ditch this is the advice you need:

Did you know you can help protect our star-filled skies and nocturnal wildlife by following this advice: Dark Sky Reserve advisory leaflets Planning for Dark Night Skies – South Downs National Park Authority

If you are planning any development or alterations to your home – the Parish Council Village Design Statement (VDS) is currently being updated but the current one can be found on Winchester City Council webpages Village and Neighbourhood Design Statements – Winchester City Council

There is also a website for the parish council… https://www.soberton.org/home

The village has a few popular events which usually occur (no COVID restrictions permitting)

Keep an eye out for information on these events- they are great opportunities to meet everyone and get involved

If you’ve not lived without mains drainage before… there are several companies who can empty your tank for you- advice on managing this aspect of rural living is here: Your sewage- your environment leaflet

If you’re new to having an oil tank- letting it run out of oil will damage your boiler, equally you should ensure your home insurance covers you for leaks- there’s some useful information here: Oil Care Leaflet

If on moving here you now have a native hedge on your land… some tips here on how best to maintain it for it to stay healthy and help wildlife: Healthy Hedge Tips
